The story

Chaparral Cars was Jim Hall's Texas race shop. The 2E introduced the high wing that every later race car copied. The 2J used fans to suck itself to the track and was banned after one season.

History

Hall built Chaparrals in Midland with GM support. The 2-series cars ran Can-Am and sports-car races through the 1960s. The 2E of 1966 put a driver-adjustable wing on struts. The 2J of 1970 added a snowmobile engine to drive two rear fans.

On track

Chaparral won at Mosport, Laguna Seca, and other Can-Am rounds. The 2J was so effective that rivals protested and the SCCA banned it. Surviving cars are among the most important American race cars in private hands.
