Cadillac is the luxury automotive division of General Motors and was for half a century the definitive American luxury marque, "the Standard of the World." Founded in Detroit by Henry Leland in 1902 and named for Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French explorer who founded the city, the brand established standards of precision manufacturing that defined modern automotive production. Today the V-Series performance line, particularly the CT5-V Blackwing with its supercharged 6.2-litre V8 and manual gearbox, represents Cadillac's most compelling claim to driver-focused excellence.
Be Iconic
Henry Leland founded the Cadillac Automobile Company in Detroit in August 1902 after the Henry Ford Company dissolved. The brand immediately distinguished itself for engineering precision, winning the Dewar Trophy twice (1908, 1915) from the Royal Automobile Club of Great Britain for its interchangeable parts manufacturing, a revolutionary concept that laid the foundation for mass production. General Motors acquired Cadillac in 1909. Through the 1920s and 1930s Cadillac set the standard for American prestige: the V16 of 1930, with its 7.4-litre engine, was the smoothest American car ever built. The Eldorado convertibles of the 1950s captured Jet Age optimism with extravagant tailfins. A prolonged decline through the 1970s and 1980s gave way to a genuine performance renaissance: the CTS-V of 2004 brought supercharged V8 power and genuine sports handling to the luxury sedan segment, culminating in the CT5-V Blackwing, the most powerful production Cadillac in history at 668 bhp.
Cadillac has a distinguished modern racing heritage. Cadillac-branded Northstar LMP prototypes competed at Le Mans from 2000 to 2002. The IMSA WeatherTech DPi.V.R Cadillac prototype, run by Chip Ganassi Racing and Action Express Racing, won the Daytona 24 Hours in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and the DPi drivers' championship multiple times. The new V-LMDh competes in the GTP class of both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship including Le Mans, where Cadillac has finished on the overall podium in the modern GTP era.
