The story

Bentley Motors is a British manufacturer of ultra-luxury grand touring automobiles and performance SUVs, hand-building some of the world's most powerful and sumptuous vehicles at its Crewe factory since 1946. Founded by Walter Owen Bentley in 1919 with the goal of building "a good car, a fast car, the best in its class," the marque became famous for winning Le Mans five times in the 1920s with wealthy gentleman racing drivers known as the Bentley Boys. Owned by Volkswagen Group since 1998, Bentley has retained its identity as a manufacturer of grand tourers blending extraordinary performance with thousands of hours of hand-stitched craftsmanship.

History

W.O. Bentley, an engineer and passionate racing driver, formed Bentley Motors in 1919 in Cricklewood, north London. The early 3 Litre won Le Mans in 1924 and 1927; the 4.5 Litre and legendary 6.5-litre Speed Six dominated thereafter. The so-called Bentley Boys, Woolf Barnato, "Babe" Barnato, Tim Birkin, Glen Kidston, were wealthy gentlemen racers who funded and drove the cars at Le Mans, becoming celebrities as famous as the cars themselves. Financial difficulties led Rolls-Royce to acquire Bentley in 1931; for decades thereafter Bentleys were essentially badge-engineered Rolls-Royces. Vickers acquired the group in 1980, and Volkswagen Group purchased Bentley in 1998. The Continental GT of 2003 marked a decisive renaissance: its 552 bhp twin-turbocharged W12 engine and panoramic coupe body attracted a new generation of buyers while honouring the grand touring tradition. Bentley is now electrifying its range, with BEV models planned from 2026.

On track

Bentley's Le Mans legacy is among the most storied in motorsport. The original Bentley Boys won the 24 Hours five times: 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, and 1930, setting a standard for British endurance racing that was unequalled for decades. After a 70-year absence, Bentley returned to Le Mans in 2001 with the EXP Speed 8 prototype, finishing third. The Speed 8 won outright in 2003, Bentley's sixth Le Mans victory, drawing an unbroken line from W.O.'s machines to the modern era. The Continental GT3 customer racing programme has consistently won class victories at Bathurst, Spa, the Nürburgring, and the British GT Championship.
